오르면 내려가고 내려가면 오르는 굴곡진 산길, 턱밑까지 차오르는 숨. 느닷없이 예보에도 없던 비구름이나 눈구름을 불러들여 산객의 산행을 저지하기도 하고, 산머리를 눈앞에 둔 산객에게 돌부리나 빙판을 내어주고는 방심을 노리기도 한다. 다 왔다 싶어도 정상은 아직 까마득한 산. 한걸음에 들숨, 한걸음에 날숨. 걸음마다 호흡에 정성을 기울이지 아니하면 저 산(山)은 수단과 방법을 가리지 아니하고 산머리의 일념을 품은 산객을 냉엄하게 내친다. 산이 인생에 비유되고, 인생이 산에 비유되는 이유이다. 청춘(靑春). 인생의 답을 갈망했던 가장 뜨거웠던 그 시절, 그 답을 산에서 찾고자 친구들이 바다로 향할 때, 나는 천시(天時) 무시로 산으로 향했다. 하지만 설악 대청봉에서도 지리 천왕봉에서도, 산은 인생에 대한 명확한 답을 보여주지 않았고 여전히 안개와 구름에 가려진 채로 신오하게 내 앞에 우뚝 서 있다. 백두 장군봉에 서야 가르쳐줄까, 히말라야 에베레스트에 서야 가르쳐줄까. 그래도 미지의 산에서 또렷이 보이는 그 무엇. 저 산에는 우리의 땀과 숨결이 배어있다는 것과 저 산은 지도에 작도되어 있지 않다는 것.
A winding mountain path that goes down when go up and up when go down. And breath that fills up to the chin. Besides, the mountain gives ordeals to people. In addition, the mountain suddenly brings in rain or snow clouds that were not in the forecast to prevent people from hiking, and gives stones or ice sheets to people who reach the top of the mountain to induce carelessness. People think they've reached the top, but it's still a long way off. When people climb a mountain without paying attention to their breathing, that mountain treats coldly those who dream of reaching the top of the mountain by any means. Therefore, people often compare mountains to life and life to mountains. Young days(靑春). In those days when I was most passionate about longing for the answer of life, I headed to the mountain every day to find the answer. However, neither Daecheongbong Peak in Seoraksan Mountain nor Cheonwangbong Peak in Jirisan Mountain showed me a clear answer to life, and they still stand tall in front of me mysteriously, covered by fog and clouds. Can I find the answer at Janggunbong Peak on Mt. Baekdu or Everest in the Himalayas. Still, something is clearly visible from the unknown mountain. The fact that our sweat and breath permeated that mountain of life and that it is not marked on the map.
