내 기억 속의 선생님은 단 한 분이다.  그분의 첫인상은 어찌나 강했던지,  흐릿한 내 기억 속에 선명하게 새겨져 있다.  처음 반 배정을 받은 우리 꼬맹이들의 초조함으로 가득한  교실 문을 조용히 열고 들어오시던 담임 선생님은  눈을 동그랗게 뜬 우리들의 시선을 뒤로하고,  그저 말없이 하얀 분필을 들고는  검은 칠판 위에 묵직한 필체로 한 '단어'를 쓰셨다.  그리고 다시 우리 쪽으로 뒤돌아 서서는,  의아해하던 우리 꼬맹이들에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다.  "이것은 너희 인생에 있어서 가장 중요한 것이다."  그것은... 그러니까 그 단어는, 다름 아닌, '자유'였다.  There is only one teacher in my memory.  How strong his first impression was..

중도는, 좌우의 눈치를 보며 중간 지점의 길을 가는 것이 아니라, 묵묵히 바른길을 가는 것을 의미한다, 나무를 지탱시키는 뿌리처럼. The middle way means not going halfway between left and right, but rather silently going the proper way. Like the roots that support a tree.

물길을 막으면 물이 흘러넘치듯, 부정선거 이슈도 그리 될 것이다.  Just as water overflows if blocked, so will the issue of rigging elections.

좋은 행은 언제나 좋으나, 그렇지 않은 행은 한시적으로만 좋다.  Good actions are always good, but bad actions are only good for a limited time.

인적 뜸한 골목에 서색이 들 무렵 야로(夜露)에 찌든 가로등 위로 살포시 첫눈이 내린다. 여인의 살결같이 하얗고 보드라운 첫눈이 숱하게 홀로 소야한 가로등의 두근거림 위로 수줍게 살몃살몃 내린다.  The cold, pale light of dawn shines on an alley that is empty, the first snow on a street lamp that is wet with night dew gently falls. The soft and white first snow like a woman's skin, shyly falls on a quiver of the street lamp staying alone at night every day.

"있을 때 잘해"라는 말이 있는데, '자유'도 마찬가지인 것 같다. There is a saying, “Do well when you have the chance,” and the same goes for ‘freedom.’

떠나가는 햇빛만이 하늘을 붉게 물들이는 것은 아니었다. 로켓 추진기에서 뿜어져 나오는 열기만큼이나 저들은 인상적이고 뜨거웠다. It wasn't just the departing sunlight that painted the sky red. They were as impressive and hot as the heat radiating from the rocket propulsion.

인간 같은 억새는 있어도, 인간 같은 나무는 없는 것 같다.  Even if there is the silver grass like the human, there seems to be no tree like the human.

우리가 행하는 영력(另力)들이 헛헛하지 않기를  I pray that our special efforts will not be in vain
